Civic Education

Comprehensive and accessible civic education programs focused on schools

Understanding the roles and responsibilities of government and of citizens will help foster a sense of ownership of government by all Somali’s and encourage collective efforts to rebuild and develop the nation. Somalia’s very stretched education sector has little spare capacity to teach beyond core subjects. Yet given the history of civil unrest we contend that civic education is a core subject. We will work with schools directly to develop materials and curricula on civic education that over time can be implemented by schools at low or no additional cost. But this is an urgent concern so we will share our accessible analytical material with schools across Somalia so that children are also informed on the important debates shaping the future of the country. The products developed by the digital theatre will be shown in schools to spark engagement with Somalia’s history and culture, and to encourage the development of informed and active citizens. And we will develop a travelling roadshow to bring public servants past and present to meet with school children, explain their experiences, and take questions. The roadshow will particularly focus on schools outside Mogadishu and the state capitals.
